First Brewery School

As the old brewery saying goes: "The brewmaster brews the beer, but the pubkeeper makes it", or: "The quality of beer in a pub is determined by how demanding the pub's visitors are."
Staropramen Brewery is home to the "First Brewery School", which is designed for pub owners, their employees and also for pub regulars, all of them people whose lives are characterised by beer in one way or another. The goal of this project, which is informally linked to the Tap Quality Seal, is to explain to all how to properly care for beer so that the pub guest can drink the beer at its best. The First Brewery School is the only project of its kind in the Czech Republic and, perhaps, in the entire world. Every pubkeeper who serves our beer is welcome to register for the school along with his or her pub regulars.

The School Day

The First Brewery School sessions take place every week on Monday. Each "class" consists of approximately forty students. The school day begins around 10:00 with a morning brewery tour led by Commercial Brewmaster Jaroslav Svoboda, who has been wit Pivovary Staropramen for 32 years. After the practical portion, consisting of the complete brewery tour, the next subject is theory. First, the students learn important facts about the beer brewing industry, past and present, with a special emphasis on Smíchov. This portion, together with a lecture on beer brewing procedures, is led by Commercial Brewmaster Libor Vávra, who has been with the brewery for 26 years. After a break and refreshment in the form of Staropramen 10-degree beer, wheat beer or the semidark Garnet beer, Milan Loskot, national manager for technical development, arrives. He is in charge of everything related to correct beer decanting techniques.
After that it's time to talk shop – any beer-related subject is fair game. Generally, the school day ends at around 4:00 p.m., at which time the graduates are ceremonially presented with a symbolic diploma in the form of one Staropramen founder's stock certificate from 1869, issued specially for this purpose. They also receive a brochure which summarises all the basic information on Staropramen beer, including the essential 10 Commandments for Pubkeepers.
